University Grants Commission has recommended to give autonomous status to Pondicherry Government Engineering College
Pondicherry government Engineering College was started in the 1984-85 academic year. Initially, college was started with a few courses, but it is now operating with 13 departments. Here more than 2000 students are studying in B.tech and M.tech courses.
This college was the first engineering college in Pondicherry, Due to improper Vision it couldn’t able to reach the next growth. The main reason for this was inefficient college infrastructure. College officials tried to get autonomous status for the past six years, many attempts was unsuccessful.
After many obstacles, Pondicherry University gave permanent recognition for Government Engineering college, also recommended to award autonomous status. Regard this, a few months ago, University Grants Commission visited the college for inspection.
Generated report was recently placed on the Executive Committee panel of UGC and after the discussions, decision is taken now to award autonomous status to the engineering college. Pondicherry University Academy Council going to arrange a meet in couple of weeks to offer autonomous status to the college.
If college get autonomous status it can develop curriculum for courses as per the society requirement, also it is able to undertake various research programmes and University Grants Committee give financial support to this. It can also start new courses.
